Photos update

13/9/16 – at the royal standard in lyme – just realised it’s almost a year since i added any photos to my site, so i have rather a lot to upload – they normally do a good pint of palmers 200 at this pub 13/9/16 – walkers on the cobb at lyme 13/9/15 – more […]

Photo catch up

22/2/16 – A trip to Plymouth – This green domed building looks quite interesting – it is called the immersive vision theatre http://i-dat.org/ivt/ 22/2/16 – this seems quite a good idea for people who don’t want to carry their lock everywhere – since getting a brompton 3 years ago I have forgotten how heavy locks can […]

Christmas, Bath & Cigars

7/11/15 – Some street art at eastbourne gate in taunton – i quite like it but there were loads of comments in the local paper from people who did not like it 21/11/15 – A trip to lyme 22/11/15 – firepool redevelopment project next to river tone 6/12/15 – another trip to lyme – the […]

Dismaland, Quantocks and Cat

We were pretty fortunate to get dismaland tickets as they seem to go within seconds of being released. Luckily a ticket did become available BUT it was £20 per head instead of the expected £5 however this was due to it being a friday evening slot with various bands on stage. It was a bit […]

Back from Holiday

It’s a month or so now since I got back from Vienna so thought I’d check out what I images I had collected – mainly locally in an around taunton but a few from lyme as well. This chap had a puppet on his arm while crossing the road The lift in Paul Street car […]

Vienna

Day 1 – Sunday 7th June This is the road outside the Hotel – this is really “Day 2” as we had already spent a full 24 hours travelling from Taunton to Vienna by train, but “Day 1” actually in Vienna. The worst bit was finding someone already in our cabin on the night train […]

Leica M8 with Rawtherapee

These were mainly shot at f/4 although Leica digital cameras cannot record aperture as there is no data link between the lens and the body. I quite like the B&W preset profiles in Rawtherapee – there are 4 to choose from. 1/125s, iso160 1/250s, iso160 1/250s, iso640 1/180s, iso320 1/125s, iso160 1/250s, iso160 1/250s, iso160 […]

Here be dragons!

i quite like this dragon outside the brewhouse with the words “waterside house” – i remember seeing this dragon being painted in the orchard centre a firey dragon outside the cosy club a dragon in the entrance to the library outside sainsburys in county walk with a red cross and plasters this dragon at the […]

Faces

These 2 faces are visible to anyone travelling eastbound along the A38 in central Taunton near the junction with Paul Street Faces 1/125s @ f/16 (iso 100) It also seems to be the place where they store their supplies of toilet rolls

No Photography without permission

This is the old St James’s street swimming pool in Taunton. I quite liked the various reflections here and the difference in white balance between the interior and the reflected light. I did not actually see the “no photography without permission” sign until I viewed the shot in capture nx2. As I was actually standing […]

Crosses

I think I’m starting to get the hang of editing the D2X raw files using Capture NX2. It is quite different from the “modern” D700 which I previously owned, and being one of the oldest Nikon DSLR cameras it does not have “picture control” support. This actually makes things quite simple as there are basically […]

Vivary Park

Still getting used to the Nikon D2X DSLR – it seems to work quite well with my 28mm f/3.5 AI lens. I have not used a DSLR for a while now as I have mainly been using my Ricoh GR compact point and shoot camera. Both cameras have a 1.5x crop sensor but are at […]

Rawtherapee

Have been doing a bit more experimentation with rawtherapee – it’s possible to build custom profiles and up till now I’ve mainly just used bundled profiles. For example it’s possible to create a “unprocessed” profile and then use that as a starting point rather than starting with a bundled profile and then tweaking that, and […]

Ricoh GR sensor dust

Looks like I have an annoying dust bunny and the lens cannot be removed so no chance of easily doing it myself like with a DSLR! I’m hoping this will get fixed under warranty. f/16 – very annoying! f/11 – still v bad f/8 – not good f/5.6 – blurry now f/4 – quite blurred […]

Film Archives

It looks like I have been quite organised with my scanning backups as I have found quite a few film shots that I took the trouble to scan, which were mainly taken in 2012 at some time. These were taken with a Nikon FM2 and Pentax MX film SLR which are both fully manual 35mm […]

Old Photos

Been sorting through some of my old photos again. Originally I had quite a lot of photos on Flickr and other similar places, but gradually it seemed like my photos were fragmented over various sites in a sort of disjointed way, so it made more sense to only post photos to a single site, hence […]

Old Photos

Time for a look at some more “old” shots from my D700. This group has a bit of a “dark” theme.   At the end of 2011 I started using flash quite a bit and got a Nikon SB910, which I sold in favour of an SB24 which cost about 10% of what the former cost. […]

Lyme Regis

Thought I’d use the D3100 for a change for this trip to Lyme – it takes a bit of getting used to switching from LCD on the GRD IV to viewfinder on the D3100. This is Herbies chip bar – used them before and got a nice portion of chips cooked to order, but went […]

Old Photos

Just been having a look through some of my old photos from the D700 – have been busy backing up my archives from this camera. A few months ago I pruned down my D700 archives from about 20000 shots to about 1000 as it’s easy to end up with so many shots it becomes hard […]

Square

Just testing out the ability of the Ricoh GRD IV when it comes to shooting square format. It actually allows you to shoot RAW (DNG) in 4:3, 2:3, 16:9 or 1:1 which is quite handy. I think there are a number of advantages with square format, the main being that you do not need to […]

Oak pattern

This is the same Oak that I saw a few days ago at Roughmoor – quite a good pattern from the branches. I now have my spare battery for the Ricoh GRD IV (the Ricoh DB-65 battery) so no more worries about suddenly running out of power.

Walk

Still pretty good weather but still pretty chilly. Better cold & sunny than warm & wet though. Looks like it will be more than a week till I get FTTC but should get it before the end of the month. Hopefully I should also be getting my spare DB-65 battery for the GRD4 before too […]

Sunny

It was pretty sunny today.   The four day Easter break goes too fast.  At least it is yet another 4 day week. Just noticed that my street cabinet has now been enabled for FTTC so have placed an order. Available Products Downstream Line Rate(Mbps) Upstream Line Rate(Mbps) Downstream Range(Mbps) Availability Date Featured Products WBC FTTC […]

Easter Sunday

The weather was actually pretty good for a bank holiday, so a visit to Brean Down seemed like a good idea.   This is the first day of British Summer Time, which is a bit of a shock to the system, and I wonder what is the point of it.   Why make the evenings lighter just […]

Anniversary

I’m trying to decide if flash or no flash works best for this type of shot, and manual flash at 1/64 power seems to work best. Other settings are ISO154, 1/30s, f/1.9 I have discovered a new trick with the GRD IV if you need to view photos without fully powering up the camera. Pressing […]

Old Oak

Actually had some brighter conditions today for shooting with the GRD4. This was quite a good old oak tree at Roughmoor, just off Silk Mills Lane Focus wise I was using the 5 metre distance setting in manual focus mode.    This seems like a good hyper focal setting for well lit scenes.   The program mode […]

Crossing

This bridge appears to have limited time left to stand as there are plans to replace it soon. It provides a pedestrian link between Leslie Avenue and Chip lane in Taunton, and crosses the main London to Penzance rail line. It looks like the new design will have ramps for cyclists and wheelchairs which should […]

GRD4 Snap Focus Mode

I’m starting to get a bit more used to the controls on the GRD4 – snap focus seems a good mode to have as it allows you to manually set a focus distance. I tend to leave it set to 2.5m mainly, but there is also 1.5m, 1m and even 5m & infinity.    This picture […]

Lunchtime Walk

A good thing about the Ricoh GRD IV is that I can easily shove it in my pocket which means that it is always ready to take photos.    When I used to use a D700 it was really heavy in comparison, so I would not take it out so often. It was surprisingly sunny today. […]

Taunton & Kilve

Have taken some more shots with the Ricoh GRD IV, in Kilve (yesterday) & Taunton (today). Noticed there is something a bit odd with some flash photos, where they are overexposed by about 3 stops occasionally – it’s a bit strange as I have updated the firmware to the latest version and it seems that […]

Lyme Regis

Some shots from Lyme Regis on Wednesday with the Ricoh GRD IV.    I had only just got the camera so was not too sure about all the settings at that stage. Luckily I soon figured out the basics like how to disable jpeg, as this just takes up extra disk space. I got a “free” […]

Ricoh GRD IV

I have now got round to ordering my Ricoh GRD IV digital camera.   With any luck it could be arriving in the next day or so. I have noticed that I seem to switch between film and digital every couple of years: 2006:   Nikon D70s (Digital SLR) 2008: Holga (Medium Format Film Lomo) 2010: Nikon […]

Darktable

Just been looking at a good raw photo editing package called Darktable http://www.darktable.org/ I’m toying with idea of getting a Ricoh GRD IV camera as a handy, easy to carry camera, with a 28mm equivalent prime lens. I’ve been shooting film for the last year since selling my D700, but it would be handy to […]

Vuescan

I now seem to have got Vuescan running OK on Ubuntu. What I did not realise was that there were not two but three packages to install from Epson’s website for the 4490 scanner. iscan-data_1.22.0-1_all.deb iscan_2.29.1-5~usb0.1.ltdl7_i386.deb iscan-plugin-gt-x750_2.1.2-1_amd64.deb It was the final “plugin” package that I forgot! My first scan effort with ubuntu – the glass […]

Lyme Regis

Lyme Regis is one of my favourite local places to visit – There are quite a lot of interesting places to see like the Cobb, and the harbour. My favourite pub is the Royal Standard as they always serve a reliable pint of Palmers Ale – the Palmers 200 is a good one to try. […]

Beach

I’m trying to optimise the image sizes for WordPress and notice that the Twenty Twelve theme has a 625 pixel max width, so I may as well make the “large” size 625 pixels wide as if it’s larger them WordPress simply scales to 625 anyway. Having a larger image that is scaled down just means […]

Boxed

Looks like my blog is actually showing up as having a ranking now on Alexa’s database, but it’s quite a high number – 16,735,342. Only been running this site for 3 days so far an I guess all sites have to start somewhere. This photo was taken with Ilford HP5 plus film. I think it […]
