Photos update

13/9/16 – at the royal standard in lyme – just realised it’s almost a year since i added any photos to my site, so i have rather a lot to upload – they normally do a good pint of palmers 200 at this pub 13/9/16 – walkers on the cobb at lyme 13/9/15 – more […]

Photo catch up

22/2/16 – A trip to Plymouth – This green domed building looks quite interesting – it is called the immersive vision theatre http://i-dat.org/ivt/ 22/2/16 – this seems quite a good idea for people who don’t want to carry their lock everywhere – since getting a brompton 3 years ago I have forgotten how heavy locks can […]

Christmas, Bath & Cigars

7/11/15 – Some street art at eastbourne gate in taunton – i quite like it but there were loads of comments in the local paper from people who did not like it 21/11/15 – A trip to lyme 22/11/15 – firepool redevelopment project next to river tone 6/12/15 – another trip to lyme – the […]

Dismaland, Quantocks and Cat

We were pretty fortunate to get dismaland tickets as they seem to go within seconds of being released. Luckily a ticket did become available BUT it was £20 per head instead of the expected £5 however this was due to it being a friday evening slot with various bands on stage. It was a bit […]

A week off

Not strictly part of my week off, this was the preceding weekend – a land rover was parked outside sainsburys in taunton FULL of balloons! I think there was some sort of competition along the lines of “guess the number of balloons” This seems a bit an annual event – the sidmouth regatta – with […]

Exeter, Seagull and Flower Show

I had not been to Exeter for a while so decided a trip there was in order – it has the advantage of being only 25 minutes away by train. I have tended to get out at Exeter St Davids, however Exeter Central was the same price and only about 3 minutes by train between […]

Back from Holiday

It’s a month or so now since I got back from Vienna so thought I’d check out what I images I had collected – mainly locally in an around taunton but a few from lyme as well. This chap had a puppet on his arm while crossing the road The lift in Paul Street car […]

Leica M8 with Rawtherapee

These were mainly shot at f/4 although Leica digital cameras cannot record aperture as there is no data link between the lens and the body. I quite like the B&W preset profiles in Rawtherapee – there are 4 to choose from. 1/125s, iso160 1/250s, iso160 1/250s, iso640 1/180s, iso320 1/125s, iso160 1/250s, iso160 1/250s, iso160 […]

mural

A mural that has recently been painted on Taunton’s “third way” – it cost £1000 to paint but it does seem to brighten up an otherwise rather featureless bit or hoarding just noticed capture nx2 has a feature to set the grey point which is handy compared with setting colour temperature which seems a bit […]

Trees

Trying out the “b&w conversion” function of capture nx2 and I quite like it trees 1/125s @ f/11 (iso100) It looks like nikon could be about to abandon support for capture nx2 with the release of capture nxd – I think I’d have preferred them to have developed nx2 as I quite like the interface […]

Faces

These 2 faces are visible to anyone travelling eastbound along the A38 in central Taunton near the junction with Paul Street Faces 1/125s @ f/16 (iso 100) It also seems to be the place where they store their supplies of toilet rolls

Crosses

I think I’m starting to get the hang of editing the D2X raw files using Capture NX2. It is quite different from the “modern” D700 which I previously owned, and being one of the oldest Nikon DSLR cameras it does not have “picture control” support. This actually makes things quite simple as there are basically […]

Vivary Park

Still getting used to the Nikon D2X DSLR – it seems to work quite well with my 28mm f/3.5 AI lens. I have not used a DSLR for a while now as I have mainly been using my Ricoh GR compact point and shoot camera. Both cameras have a 1.5x crop sensor but are at […]

Rawtherapee

Have been doing a bit more experimentation with rawtherapee – it’s possible to build custom profiles and up till now I’ve mainly just used bundled profiles. For example it’s possible to create a “unprocessed” profile and then use that as a starting point rather than starting with a bundled profile and then tweaking that, and […]

Film Archives

It looks like I have been quite organised with my scanning backups as I have found quite a few film shots that I took the trouble to scan, which were mainly taken in 2012 at some time. These were taken with a Nikon FM2 and Pentax MX film SLR which are both fully manual 35mm […]

Lunchtime ride on a Brompton

The Brompton seems ideal for making the best use of my lunch break.    Normally I go for a walk but the Brompton means I can go a lot further and see a lot more. Today I did a circuit along the lanes behind Norton Fitzwarren via Allerford Crossing. This is a large gravel storage area […]

Ricoh GR Week 2

Had the Ricoh GR now almost 2 weeks and I’m starting to get more used to the larger size of it compared with the GRD IV. Just noticed that Rawtherapee has been upgraded on my Ubuntu 12.04LTS system – now on 4.0.11.0 – not sure what updates have been included yet The rather desolate waste […]

Ricoh GR Day 3

Had a bit more of a chance to test the GR today – especially the manual focus feature as this means there is totally no shutter lag. I have “my1” set up for manual focus and “my2” set up for auto focus so that I can switch fast between taking scenic or architecture type shots […]

Longrun Meadows

Not been via Longrun Meadows for a while, so thought I’d give it a go while there is so little mud underfoot for a change. This is the “Willow Cathedral”, which was built about 2 years ago.   Looks like there has been a fair bit of work done on chopping wood from along the banks […]

Firepool Lock

Thought I would have a look at what is going on at the Firepool Lock development area. The Viridor Office is the first new building you notice as you walk along the riverside East of Taunton centre. There seem to be a lot of locals who have criticised the building as being “ugly”, but there […]

Work starts on new road in Taunton

This looks like the “first cut” for the construction of Taunton’s newest road, the Northern Inner Distribution Road. This road looks set to hopefully follow on from the success of the “Third Way” which opened a couple of years ago. Being able to get directly from Northwest Taunton to both the station and the M5 […]

Rainy

Today was pretty rainy the entire day, so not really worth going any where so I thought I would shoot some pictures locally in Taunton. People probably thought I was a bit mad to be photographing in such appalling weather, but in some ways I think bad weather can make for more interesting photos. I […]

Industrial

This is the old Norton industrial estate It has to a certain extent been redeveloped, but there are still large parts of it that remain as wasteland. Above is the Booker Cash and Carry site The Somerset Heritage Centre and Westcountry Feeds are two large units that have been built – this tank was next […]

Retro

This building in Bindon Road seems to have a bit of a “retro” 1970’s look to it. It is called Eley House and is the offices of Jelf. Moving onto the sights of Cyril Street West, we see some pink cherry blossom Finally, in Hudson Way it looks like someone had the idea of doing […]

Staplegrove Walk

Thought I’d try a new route through Staplegrove today. Starting with Greenway Road And then along towards Taunton Vale Sports Club – I noticed there was a memorial stone for a teenage boy that was murdered a few years ago here – not the sort of place you would expect this to happen really. There […]

More hip shots

OK thought I’d have another go at doing some “hip shots” today and see if I had any more luck. I was finding that a lot of my shots has a slight tilt to the right of about 2 degrees.  This is caused by me accidentally tilting the camera slightly to the left. Luckily Rawtherapee […]

Shoot from the hip

Not really tried this type of street photography before, mainly as I have only used SLR type cameras till now for street photography I have decided that “square format” is the best way to shoot, as the GRD IV can only really be shot “on its side” when shooting from the hip, so I would […]

Doomed

Looks like these businesses in Chip Lane are destined for the bulldozer. It is not a long time now till work starts on the new Northern Inner Distribution Road (NIDR) in Taunton and these businesses are right in the path of the proposed road so will have to go. Making Life Easier is moving neared […]

Oak pattern

This is the same Oak that I saw a few days ago at Roughmoor – quite a good pattern from the branches. I now have my spare battery for the Ricoh GRD IV (the Ricoh DB-65 battery) so no more worries about suddenly running out of power.

Walk

Still pretty good weather but still pretty chilly. Better cold & sunny than warm & wet though. Looks like it will be more than a week till I get FTTC but should get it before the end of the month. Hopefully I should also be getting my spare DB-65 battery for the GRD4 before too […]

Sunny

It was pretty sunny today.   The four day Easter break goes too fast.  At least it is yet another 4 day week. Just noticed that my street cabinet has now been enabled for FTTC so have placed an order. Available Products Downstream Line Rate(Mbps) Upstream Line Rate(Mbps) Downstream Range(Mbps) Availability Date Featured Products WBC FTTC […]

Easter Saturday

No excursions today, just taking some photos locally in Taunton with the GRD4. I’ve been tinkering with the focus settings and I think I might give the “auto snap” focus mode a go. This mode is a sort of “hybrid” autofocus mode as it has a phase detect AF window which gives a rough AF […]

Old Oak

Actually had some brighter conditions today for shooting with the GRD4. This was quite a good old oak tree at Roughmoor, just off Silk Mills Lane Focus wise I was using the 5 metre distance setting in manual focus mode.    This seems like a good hyper focal setting for well lit scenes.   The program mode […]

Derelict

Still testing out different focus setting on the GRD4 , yesterday I was testing the setting just below the 3m mark, and today the setting just above the 3m mark.    As the GRD4 has a small sensor it has a large DOF so one focus setting will cover many situations, which is good in many […]

Crossing

This bridge appears to have limited time left to stand as there are plans to replace it soon. It provides a pedestrian link between Leslie Avenue and Chip lane in Taunton, and crosses the main London to Penzance rail line. It looks like the new design will have ramps for cyclists and wheelchairs which should […]

GRD4 Snap Focus Mode

I’m starting to get a bit more used to the controls on the GRD4 – snap focus seems a good mode to have as it allows you to manually set a focus distance. I tend to leave it set to 2.5m mainly, but there is also 1.5m, 1m and even 5m & infinity.    This picture […]

Bone Cave 9000m

This was certainly an unusual sign post I saw while out and about with the GRD4 today I have not noticed this post before but my guess is that it’s something to do with the Somerset Heritage Centre which is nearby.   The road next to this sign appears to have been “under construction” for some […]

Lunchtime Walk

A good thing about the Ricoh GRD IV is that I can easily shove it in my pocket which means that it is always ready to take photos.    When I used to use a D700 it was really heavy in comparison, so I would not take it out so often. It was surprisingly sunny today. […]

Ricoh GRD IV auto flash overexposure issue

Been doing a bit more research about this strange issue with auto flash on the Ricoh GRD IV and I have sort of come up with a solution – use manual flash! Luckily the flash is very easy to configure without having to go into the menu system.    I can even assign one of the […]

Taunton & Kilve

Have taken some more shots with the Ricoh GRD IV, in Kilve (yesterday) & Taunton (today). Noticed there is something a bit odd with some flash photos, where they are overexposed by about 3 stops occasionally – it’s a bit strange as I have updated the firmware to the latest version and it seems that […]

Barred

This looks a bit like a prison, but it’s a actually the Somerset County Cricket Ground, next to the River Tone in Taunton I’m still getting used to my Logitech K400r keyboard with intergrated touchpad – I’m wondering why they made it so that the “f” keys have to have the FN key pressed to […]
